Level-5 Announces Professor Layton and the New World of Steam for Switch 2, PS5, Switch, and PC
The new game follows the familiar format of the series: a mix of narrative mystery and a series of logic puzzles. Set in the American town of Steam Bison, the story begins one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future. Steam Bison is described as a rapidly developing city powered by steam technology that has outpaced London in growth. A mysterious incident in the town pulls Professor Hershel Layton and his apprentice Luke Triton into a new adventure.
Key characters in the game include Professor Layton, voiced by Yo Oizumi; Luke Triton, voiced by Mio Imada; twin sisters Elinora and Elida Allinston, voiced by Riho Yoshioka; inventor Eggmuffin Sonder, voiced by Mahiro Takasugi; town mayor Bolt Allinston, voiced by Shinya Kote; Sheriff Bobsley, voiced by Koichi Yamadera; and several other supporting figures such as the eagle Falcon (Akio Otsuka) and fortune‑teller Mystella (Michaela Wako Sato). The game also features a new voice cast for the Allinston twins, who are portrayed by the same actress.
The release announcement was made by William D'Angelo, a long‑time Level‑5 analyst who has worked for the company since 2010 and has been involved in hardware estimates and content creation for the gaming community. D'Angelo’s article, posted on the Level‑5 website, includes a trailer that highlights the game’s setting and puzzle style. The article also references QuizKnock, a media platform led by Takuji Izawa that shares educational content and has a YouTube channel with over 2.3 million subscribers as of September 2024.
The game will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, which launched on June 5 2025 and is backward compatible with most Switch titles, as well as on the original Switch, which has shipped over 155 million units worldwide. It will also appear on PlayStation 5 and on PC through Steam, expanding the series’ reach to a broader audience. Level‑5’s Professor Layton franchise has sold more than 20 million units worldwide as of April 2026, making it the company’s best‑selling series.
At this time, the exact release year remains unconfirmed by Level‑5. The company has confirmed the December 10 launch window and the platforms, but further details about the year will likely be clarified in the coming months. Fans of the series can expect a new puzzle adventure that builds on the established narrative and character roster while introducing a fresh setting and new challenges.
