Ohio State Launches Buckeye BioLaunch to Accelerate AI-Driven Drug Discovery
Buckeye BioLaunch brings together a consortium of Ohio State entities, including the Wexner Medical Center, the Comprehensive Cancer Center–James Cancer Hospital, Solove Research Institute, and the Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. Its mission is to build a pipeline of therapeutics that move from early discovery toward commercialization, thereby stimulating biotech growth, job creation, and economic development in Central Ohio.
The initiative will support projects across the entire drug‑development spectrum—from genomics and target identification to molecule discovery, preclinical development, and eventual clinical trials. Ohio State plans to sponsor 10 to 20 AI‑driven screening projects each year, measuring progress through composition‑of‑matter patents, technical milestones, licenses, startup formation, and clinical trials.
“Ohio State intends to be a national force in therapeutic innovation, where producing new medicines every five to ten years becomes an expected outcome,” said Kroetz in a university statement. The program will tap into clinical and genomic datasets from Ohio State Genomic Health, an investment of the Wexner Medical Center.
According to the university, the combination of Genomic Health data, the College of Pharmacy’s drug‑development expertise, and the College of Medicine’s clinical and translational research strengths positions Ohio State to accelerate therapeutic development. Kroetz added that the “why now” is simple: AI is transforming drug discovery at a remarkable speed.
Buckeye BioLaunch complements other Ohio State investments, such as faculty hiring in computational chemistry, genomics, and health‑data AI through its AI Faculty Hiring Initiative. It also aligns with the university’s AI(X) Hub, a cross‑disciplinary effort focused on artificial‑intelligence research and innovation—including applications in health care.
The university will evaluate the initiative against commercial and research milestones, including patents, licenses, startup formation, and clinical trials. By accelerating the path from research to patents, startup formation, and clinical trials, Buckeye BioLaunch aims to inject momentum into Central Ohio’s life‑sciences sector.
