On Wednesday, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) surged 12.66% in a single session, propelling its market capitalization to 3.5 trillion yuan—roughly $490 billion—and making it the most valuable company listed on China’s A‑share market. State‑owned capital from Hefei owns more than 30 % of CXMT, and the city’s stake has yielded gains of over 1 trillion yuan, Aiqicha’s corporate credit database shows.

Hefei’s first‑half 2026 data underline the payoff of the city’s long‑term high‑tech strategy. The municipal bureau reported a gross domestic product of 707.3 billion yuan, up 6.8 % year‑on‑year—well ahead of the national growth rate of 4.7 %. Production of computer and communications equipment jumped 92.5 %, while automobile output rose 16 %. High‑tech manufacturing now accounts for 41.9 % of the city’s industrial output, a 12.3‑percentage‑point climb from the previous year.

The transformation began with strategic bets in 2008, when BOE Technology was founded in Hefei, followed by the launch of CXMT in 2016. In 2020, the city financed electric‑vehicle maker NIO. These early investments in emerging sectors have become the engines of Hefei’s growth.

Analysts point to the city’s knack for spotting promising industries and supplying patient capital as the key to its success. Hefei has joined China’s ranks of “double‑trillion” cities, with an annual GDP surpassing 1 trillion yuan and a permanent population of more than 10 million, the bureau reports.

Officials say CXMT’s rally is only the beginning. Hefei is expanding its portfolio of advanced manufacturing and technology, with plans to boost high‑tech output and nurture new industrial clusters.

Today, CXMT remains China’s largest DRAM maker and the world’s fourth‑largest. The recent market‑cap surge underscores Hefei’s status as a semiconductor hub. Planned actions include further capital injections to upgrade CXMT’s production lines and research facilities, and ongoing support for other high‑tech firms in the region. Hefei’s trajectory offers a blueprint for other Chinese municipalities aiming to build new quality productive forces.
